Okay. I know. I’ve been remiss in posting. Steve and I got moved in and sucked into working on the house, and I realized it’s been two months already! So here’s the news! I’ve got lots of pictures to share too.

The house is fantastic. We are both so in love with owning a house, the house itself, the neighborhood, living in Veneta/the Eugene area. I’m not loving the hour long commute so much, but make do with NPR podcasts and books on my iPod. Although it does give Steve time to start dinner as I’m on my way home. As the member of the partnership that isn’t so much into cooking, this works out very well for me (and for Steve, most of the time). The cats have adjusted marvelously. They were a little nervous the first night, but Pepper didn’t hide under the covers for 2 days like she did when Steve and I moved in together, so that was a major accomplishment. I think what helped is both of them were feeling cooped up in our apartment, and are loving all of the extra room we have now. Zeus is really enjoying having a long clear space to run and play fetch with his cloth ball. His occasional favorite new cat spot is the beam above our kitchen, he plays King Cat up there. And since we now live in more of a rural setting, there is a lot more to look at outside. Our property backs up to a forested large lot, and sometimes the horses that live there venture closer to our fence. The best part? There are wild turkeys everywhere. A flock of about 15 sauntered through the backyard last week. It looked like dinosaurs were running around. According to our neighbors it’s a fairly common occurrence, so I’m sure we will see them again.

I was a little nervous about moving to a new place, and not having all of the comfort creature stores and stuff right near by like we did in Corvallis, but I’ve adjusted well. Steve and I used to piecemeal shop in Corvallis, stopping by here and running to the store almost every day. Now, since we have to drive all the way into Eugene (the one grocery store in Veneta is outrageously expensive), we can’t really do that anymore. So now we “go to town” on Saturdays. It’s pretty fun, especially since there are places to go like Market of Choice and Trader Joe’s – places we didn’t have in Corvallis. The only downfall is there is no Starbucks in Veneta, or even on our side of Eugene. I do miss a good Starbucks as an evening dessert. Eugene is the perfect kind of city, big enough to have a variety of ethnic restaurants and more than one yarn store, and small enough that it doesn’t feel impersonal.

So far the bulk of our work on the house has been cosmetic.  We painted the living room, den and kitchen already.  I decided to do the living room in earth tones, with lots of browns and creams.  The couch is leather on the outside, and a microfiber on the seating area that is designed to look like suede.  The kitchen counters are a laminate that is called Oxide, which looks a lot like oxidized copper.  I really like them, and wanted to bring them out, so we painted the kitchen terracotta.  The den is roasted red pepper.  It’s a really rich red, and makes the den super cozy.

Steve’s parents arrive tonight to stay with us for Thanksgiving, and my family is going to come over on Friday for the holiday dinner. Our first Thanksgiving in our house, and we are in charge of the turkey. I hope everyone has a fantastic holiday – and I’ll try to update more often from now on. :)

Big Big News Sunday, Sep 16 2007

The house is done!  Finito!  Complete!  Terminado!  Our new closing date is September 28th, and we will be moving in for good the first weekend of October.  I don’t have pictures (we forgot the camera yesterday), but Steve and I are both really really happy with how everything turned out.  The front yard landscaping is amazing, we have three good sized maple trees, baby shrubs and healthy green grass.  We will do a final walkthrough with the project manager and someone from the warranty office on the 24th, to go over everything about the house we need to know.  The onsite agent was going through yesterday and marking every spot on the wall that needed work, every cabinet that had the slightest wiggle – everything they need to make sure and fix before the offical walkthrough.

Two weeks, and we will be official real homeowners!

Short Post, Lots of Action Sunday, Sep 2 2007

Today brings a short post from the home of my parents.  We are on our way to Cabo san Lucas tomorrow morning, and will meet Hurricane Henrietta on Tuesday!  Steve hadn’t been by the house for about two weeks, and I haven’t been since our trip to Florence, so we went down to Veneta yesterday to see what has been going on.  We will be gone for a week, so we wanted to satisfy our curiosity before we left for Mexico.

Last week was painting week, which is why Steve hadn’t stopped by.  The exterior and interior is all painted, and I really like the exterior color we picked out.  It’s a browny mushroom color.  The house right next door is a dark grey, which looks really good next to ours.  The tile floor in the kitchen, and the linoleum in the bathrooms and laundry room have been completed.  All of the kitchen and bathroom cabinets and counters are installed, and so are all of the light fixtures with the exception of the ceiling fans in the living room and master bedroom.  Steve and I were thinking, and the only big things left to do are to install the carpet, toilets and sinks, the kitchen appliances, and front yard landscaping.  The model home office won’t give us a definitive answer if the house will be done sooner than we thought, but I’m holding out hope.  I don’t think that the stuff left to do will take a month and a half.  We’ll see – we are already planning on October 14th, so if it’s the 14th so be it.

Well, that’s all for today, see you all when we get back from Cabo!

Looks Like a House Thursday, Aug 23 2007

It’s been a while since I’ve updated on our Stellar adventure.  It has been a whirlwind the past few weeks, filled with work, visiting family, and weddings.  Steve’s best friend TJ got married this past Sunday at the coast, and to start the weekend, Steve’s parents Tom and Sherrie came by on their way to the wedding to see the house.  It’s like playing a record again, but sweet sassy molassy, the construction workers are going fast.  Last Friday (now a week ago), the plumbing and electrical wiring was completed, and all of the drywall was installed and ready for texture, and the driveway has been poured.  We have a REAL DRIVEWAY!!  And we measured it, and the truck will fit in the driveway.  Hooray!  Steve did a walk through with Tom, Sherrie and one of the builders representatives, and wow does it look good.

I haven’t actually seen the house for about 3 weeks, not since we took the trip to Florence.  Steve and I are planning to go down this weekend to see what they’ve been up to this week, especially since I’m not sure what they will do next.  At the beginning it was obvious what the next step was – build the frame, side the house, build the roof, put in plumbing, put in electrical, pour concrete, put up drywall.  Now, after they do the texture on the walls, what goes in first?  Flooring, cabinets, fixtures?  It’s like putting together a puzzle, but this is the fun stuff to see go in.  It’s already looking like a house, now we get all the stuff that makes it feel like a house.

IKEA must know we are working on furnishing a house - we got the 2008 catalouge in the mail yesterday.  Tricky IKEA, playing with my emotions.

Roof Over Our Heads Sunday, Aug 5 2007

A week ago, on Sunday, Steve and I decided a trip to the beach was in order.  Since Florence is going to be our new “local” beach, and we were going up to Lincoln City in a few weeks for a wedding, we decided Florence would be our beach destination.  We decided to go through Veneta and see how long it took to get to the beach from our new home.  Well, we couldn’t just drive through and not stop by the house, so we stopped in to see what was going on.  The roof trusses were mostly up the last time we stopped by, but they were all finished and the roofers had started sheeting it to get ready for the roofing material.  Both shower/tub combos were also onsite waiting for the plumbers.

Since it was a Sunday, the model home was open.  Since the model home is identical to our home, we were able to take measurements of all of the windows so we can order blinds ahead of moving in.  We also took measurements of the living room, to help us decide which way the couch should be oriented and think about what other types of furniture we should think about.

The trip to the beach was great.  We stopped in a Mo’s to have some clam chowder, and then drove back up by Highway 101 through Newport.  We stopped in to walk on the beach at the lighthouse in Newport, and stopped at Dairy Queen on the way back to have an ice cream cone.

M and S at the beach

Steve stopped by the house again this Thursday (his usual day to stop in), and we have a roof already!  It looked like the roofers were almost done installing the roof.  The plumbers had been in also, since both shower/tubs were installed and you could see the plumbing in the walls.

Today we stopped in at Blackledge Furniture, to look again at the couch we picked out.  They had an almost identical one for a bit cheaper than the original we picked out, so we settled on that.  We also picked out an uphoulstered ottoman with drawers, instead of having a coffee table.  We got an ottoman like this so we could have some extra seating when we have guests, and still have a place to put drinks and things on regular days.  Along with the two seating pieces, we picked out an entertainment console.  We had originally planned to wall mount the TV, but to do that, we would have had to do all the wiring and cutting of drywall after the house had already been built.  We also weren’t positive that we could do it without wires to things like our TiVo and surround sound be showing.  So we opted for a TV stand type thing instead.  It’s like a dining room sideboard but with shelves for equipment in the middle.  Hooray for cute furniture!

Not Slowing Down Wednesday, Jul 25 2007

Well, the house construction has not slowed down one bit. The rest of the house, and garage, has been framed. Almost all of the windows have been installed, and siding is up on three sides of the house. Steve and I were confused when the front wasn’t being sided as well, but we realized they use a different style siding on the front. The front has more of a Craftsman style and more detailing, but they don’t do it all the way around the house to help keep the cost down.

Roof Trusses

When Steve stopped by yesterday, all of the roof trusses were sitting on top of the house ready to be installed. I’m sure that many of them went up today. We looked at the list of other houses to be constructed during the same phase ours is, and there is a full month between the finish of ours and the finish of the next on the list. Which means that they will probably only be working on our house for the next little bit.

Steve and I are getting very excited at how fast the house is going up, but it’s also a little nerve wracking! It’s such a huge thing in our lives, and it’s speeding ahead like a steam train. The rest of the summer is going to go by so fast, with my office being so busy getting students back to campus and going on vacation to Mexico the first week of September.

Look, it’s a garage! For TWO cars! (Don’t worry, we will uphold Moore tradition and still have another vehicle to park outside of the garage) :)

Full Speed Ahead! Monday, Jul 23 2007

When I say full speed ahead, I mean full speed ahead. Since I posted last, the house has been growing like a weed. Steve stopped by the house on Thursday of last week, and was surprised to see a back wall framed and our backyard sliding glass door already installed. There was a stack of framing materials and brand new windows waiting outside the house.

Framing Started

Since we were told they usually frame three houses at a time, we were thinking, cool, they got started on ours and will work on the the other two for a little bit. Everything is right on schedule, and starting to look like a house.

Cue Saturday. Steve and I went to visit his parents this weekend. I hadn’t actually been out to the house for about three weeks, and had only seen it in person as a lot, so we decided to take the long way and stop by on the way to Fall River. Needless to say, we were both shocked at what we found. Almost all of the exterior walls were framed, windows were installed, and one of the walls already had siding on! The other two houses haven’t even begin being framed yet, so the crews are focusing only on our house right now. We met one of our neighbors, and she told us when they bought their house, which is identical to ours, they closed three weeks early! Based on the progress they are making right now, I wouldn’t be surprised if we ended up closing early too. We could be coming home from Mexico to pack immediately.

It looks like a house!

Jubilation Tuesday, Jul 17 2007

I realized in the midst of shrieking in joy “it’s raining!” when I woke up this morning that I really had acclimated to Oregon. Literally, out loud proclaiming to the world and the cats that I was thrilled it was raining. You will recall, of course, that anything happening before 10:00 a.m. in my world does not usually inspire anything resembling joy. My head filled with thoughts of sweaters and clogs and woolly knitted socks. Alas, no woolly sweater or socks (it is still July) but the clogs got to take a well deserved break from the depths of the closet and oh boy did they (and my feet) enjoy it. What totally bursts the weather bubble is that it won’t stay this way for long, it’s July and it’s going to be hot again. Really hot. Above 80 hot. Yes, I spent my childhood thinking anything below 80 degrees required a heavy coat. For now, I will revel in a few days of flannel sheets and live vicariously through my knitting of woolly things instead of wearing woolly things.

On house things – Steve went by last week to check on the progress, and boy oh boy they are moving right along! The foundation was done, the foundation frames were pulled, and the floor joists had already been installed.

Foundation and Floor Joist

When we were talking to the site office, they mentioned they have three framing crews come in and frame three houses at a time. The two houses next to ours were finishing up with the floor joists, so framing should be starting this week. It will start to look like a real house soon. Hopefully my rain won’t hinder the progress!

On our way Sunday, Jul 8 2007

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a foundation! Or at least, we have foundation forms. Steve went by on Thursday and the contractor has formed the foundation for our house and the houses next to us. We spent the weekend having dinner with some friends from college and going to Costco, so we don’t know if the concrete has been poured yet. I would guess it was poured on Friday so it could have the weekend to set, but I have no idea if that actually happened. We’ll find out this week on Steve’s next drive by. The picture below is facing west, and this side of the house will house two of the bedrooms with a bathroom in between. I’m starting to get an idea of the outdoor space, so we can plan for putting up a fence and doing the backyard landscaping. The front yard landscaping will be done as part of the house construction, but we will need to do the backyard landscaping ourselves.

Foundation West

When we decided to buy a new house, we set the goal of being able to buy new living room furniture for the house. The stuff we have now is functional, but we are tired of the hand me down mismatched La-z-boys. Yesterday we went furniture looking at a store in downtown Corvallis called Blackledge. And we found our dream couch! It was the only couch in the entire store that both Steve and I agreed was very comfortable (I prefer soft and squishy and Steve prefers firm and linear), and we both loved the way it was modern in style but looks like it belongs in a living room and not a showroom. Deciding on a couch with no bickering – it’s on the top of the wishlist now!

Mallory Chair

On a whim Steve and I decided to go to Costco today (yes, we know, never go to Costco on a whim!), and ended up finding a new chair. It’s called the Mallory chair, and although it was a bit of a splurge, a leather chair was in the top three things we were saving for. It was a really great deal too, which made it easier for us to swallow getting it right now. Steve is a big fan of his new “man chair” – he is showing everyone the ATV he wants get get for the sand dunes in Florence. Silly husband, he thinks he is going to get to have more motorized toys in the new house. Lawnmower Steve, think lawnmower!

New Adventure Friday, Jul 6 2007

Stellar Avenue

It’s official, Steve and I are now real grownups. *Grownup: One who pays a mortgage and has to mow the lawn and pull weeds with no allowance.*

We’ve bought a house! We will be moving to Venenta, Oregon in October. Veneta is a cute little town just west of Eugene, and is home to the Oregon Country Fair. We will be just about 10 minutes away from Fern Ridge Reservoir and just under an hour away from Florence and the Oregon Coast.

Our new house is on Stellar Avenue, in a new community in Veneta called Perkins Country Estates. Our lot has just passed the building permit stage, and has only been graded in preparation for the foundation. We have a corner lot which backs up into a sort of wooded parcel of property. We learned last weekend that the back line of our property borders the Veneta Urban Growth Boundary, so hopefully, barring any Measure 37 claims there won’t be any development behind us. Right now there aren’t any claims bordering our property, so I hope this holds true.

About the house! It will be brand new, and is a 3 bedroom 2 bath with a 2 car garage and den/office. It’s called the Klamath plan. From the link, add the den instead of the living room and the breakfast nook pop-out. The model home is an identical floor plan, and let me tell you, the cats are going to love having more room to run around! Myself, I’m a big fan of the huge walk in closet. We were able to pick out most everything in terms of interiors, which was very fun.

I have to tell you – it’s pretty exciting to think about being a grownup with a house. Except for the weeding.
